Deaf Legal Services

American Sign Language interpreter: In 1994, I returned to school at Front Range Community College, with the goal of acquiring a second language, which would allow me to provide legal services to members of the deaf community without the need of having an interpreter present. I have always believed that having a third person present limits the communication between an attorney and his client. After graduating from the interpreter preparation program in 1996, I enjoyed working for five years in the educational settings ranging from kindergarten to college interpreting in the classroom for deaf students. My last assignment was interpreting for a young man with multiple disabilities from his freshman year in high school through his graduation. While working full-time as a sign language interpreter, I also continued to practice law. In 2001, after a work-related surgery to my left elbow, I returned to the full-time practice of law.
Since returning to the practice of criminal defense law, I can honestly state that I enjoy my practice of law. Although age and maturity have tempered this once young legal warrior, I have never lost my desire to make a difference in my client's cases and hopefully in their lives.
I accomplish my goals in representing my clients by working with my clients in a respectful and caring manner. This allows me to personalize a client's case to the prosecution and the Courts. I also maintain constant communication with my clients either by telephone and/or letters. Since I work on a flat fee basis, my clients do not need to worry about being charged for every phone call made to me.
This brings me to the subject of the costs of defending a criminal charge. I firmly believe that financially the scales are tipped in favor of the prosecution because they have the resources of the State of Colorado behind them. By that, I mean that they have investigators on staff to conduct follow-up investigations and interviews, support staff to assist them in preparing the case for trial and can use experts who work for the State of Colorado to assist them in preparing the case and in testifying at trial. To balance the playing field, I strongly encourage my clients to hire a private investigator to assist in the preparation of their defense and to testify at trial if needed.
Regarding attorney fees, I provide a high quality criminal defense at a very affordable flat fee plus costs basis. Attorney fees are based on each individual case and will be discussed fully during our initial consultation. Initial consultations are free in every case.

PERSONAL LIFE
I was raised in a small, rural southeastern Kansas community and met my wife when I was in the 5th grade at Lincoln Elementary School. She was a farm girl and I was the "city" boy. We have been married for 35 years and are the proud parents of two wonderful children (both adults now). My daughter is married and attending nursing school. Our son, after graduating from Fort Lewis College in Durango, is a professional football player (place kicker) and coaches young high school kickers who are attempting to kick at the collegiate levels.

We have two cats and our newest family member is our Sheltie Collie, Mickey. Mickey thinks that his purpose in life is catching Frisbees and he is very skilled at it.
The extra-curricular part of my life is my love for hang gliding. I started hang gliding in 1977 and continued until 1982, when I started skydiving. I was a member of the Aerial Visions Skydiving Team for six years, performing at air shows and professional sporting events from 1983 until 1988.
In 2000, I quit skydiving and returned to the sport of hang gliding and continue the challenges of this sport to the present time and hopefully into my sixties. I fly a Wills Wing Sport 2 hang glider, which is an intermediate glider, which I have affectionately named "Beulah Faye," after my deceased grandmother who used to love watching me fly like an eagle.
My close friends, have given me the nickname of "Skywalker" and I am proud to state that I have experienced soaring flights in a hang glider that have exceeded an hour and forty minutes. Soaring like a raptor gives me a tremendous feeling of freedom and is often the only time that my mind gets a break from the challenges of law. I often give thanks to my instructor, Mark Windsheimer of Airtime Above Hang Gliding, for his instruction and guidance in this wonderful aviation sport.
When not flying hang gliders, I enjoy collecting art by my favorite artist, Charles Banks Wilson, formerly of Miami, OK, walking with my beautiful wife and Mickey and traveling (which I don’t get enough of), especially to the beautiful Hawaiian island of Kauai or to Orlando, Florida, for hang gliding at a favorite place called Wallaby Ranch.
